But often it\u2019s the small words \u2013 button texts, instructions, error messages \u2013 that determine whether a user stays, clicks through, or leaves. That\u2019s where UX writing (user experience writing) and microcopy come into play. <br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>In this article, we'll go over what UX writing is, why microcopy is business-critical, and why you should never leave the copy until last.<br><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is UX writing?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>There are many different ways to write and just as many purposes for the different ways. For example, a copywriter can write to sell something, to arouse emotions or to get people to read about the latest in rocket science. But UX writing is not about rocking gadgets or telling a story. It's all the little bits of text that make the user experience flow. It's the words you don't think about at all until they're bad or missing. For example:   <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-list container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Button labels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Error messages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help texts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Form fields<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empty states<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><strong>Example of microcopy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-list container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\"We never save your card number\" during a payment step.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\"It takes about 2 minutes to fill out the form\" before a longer flow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\"You can change this later\" for a choice that otherwise feels binding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\"Book a meeting\" on a button where the next step is to book.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\"Password (at least 8 characters, including one number)\" directly next to a password field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\"We will get back to you within 1 business day\" after a form is submitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when the microcopy breaks?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>When a button label is clear or the words in a checkout explain exactly what happens next, the user barely thinks about it. Maybe that's why microcopy is so easy to forget. But if you don't do it right, it's immediately noticeable. Then friction occurs in the user experience. And friction is your worst enemy.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><strong>Some typical scenarios when microcopy goes wrong:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-list container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Forms are abandoned because instructions are unclear:<\/strong><br> If the user does not understand what should be in a field, there is a high risk that they will click away immediately.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Error messages that just say something is wrong:<\/strong><br> \u201cAn error occurred.\u201d What error? What should I do? Error messages that don't help only create frustration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Buttons that don't say what happens:<\/strong><br> \u201cSend.\u201d Send what? A form? Money? My soul? Unclear buttons create uncertainty. And uncertain users don\u2019t click.      <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Checkout flows that feel untrustworthy<\/strong>:<br> It doesn't matter how nice the design is if the text doesn't explain when the payment is taken, what happens if you proceed, or how delivery works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>Good microcopy is often what makes the difference between \u201cI want to continue\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m leaving this site.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What characterizes really good microcopy?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>Good microcopy is not just accurate. It takes into account context, emotions, and where the user is in the process. Good microcopy is:  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-list container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clear:<\/strong> the user doesn't have to guess what happens if they click a button, for example.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relevant<\/strong> : the text helps exactly at the moment when the need arises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Human:<\/strong> the tone is like a friendly person guiding, not a robot informing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reassurance<\/strong> : the words are reassuring, especially during sensitive moments such as purchases, forms and data.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guiding:<\/strong> the text explains what is happening now, why and what comes next.  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>When all this is in place, the user gets where they need to go without any obstacles along the way.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><strong>Example: How small words make a big difference<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>So, what separates really good microcopy from really bad microcopy? Let\u2019s get even more specific. Below are some examples where copy ruins or enhances the experience:    <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Button texts<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><em>Buttons should tell you exactly what happens when the user clicks.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cSend\u201d<br> The classic. Short, but completely without context. The user doesn't understand what is being \"sent\".<br> \u2705 \u201cBook my meeting\u201d<br> Now the user knows exactly what happens when they click. Safe and clear.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cRead more\u201d<br> A vague call to action that requires the user to guess what is actually hidden behind the click.<br> \u2705 \u201cSee prices and packages\u201d<br> Clear and concrete. The user knows exactly what type of information awaits. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cOK\u201d<br> A standard button that says nothing about the action behind the click.<br> \u2705 \u201cSave my settings\u201d<br> Confirms exactly what is happening and creates security.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cConfirm\u201d<br> Too unclear in a sensitive step like purchase or registration.<br> \u2705 \u201cComplete purchase \u2013 no payment will be taken now\u201d<br> Explains both action and consequence, which reduces hesitation.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Error messages<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><em>Error messages should help the user move forward \u2013 not just point out a problem.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cAn error has occurred\u201d<br> This is like saying \"something broke, good luck\".<br> \u2705 \u201cThe email address appears to be incorrect. Double check that you didn\u2019t forget the @.\u201d<br> Now the user receives both an explanation and a suggested solution. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cInvalid password\u201d<br> Says something is wrong, but not how to fix it.<br> \u2705 \u201cThe password needs to contain at least 8 characters and one number.\u201d<br> Provides clear guidance and reduces frustration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cSession has expired\u201d<br> Technical language that doesn't tell the user what to do next.<br> \u2705 \"Your session has timed out for security reasons. Please log in again to continue.\"<br> Explains why it happened and how to move forward. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Help texts<\/h3>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p><em>Help texts answer questions before they even arise.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cVerification required\u201d<br> The user understands that something is wrong, but not why or what happens next.<br> \u2705 \u201cWe need to verify your email to be able to send the confirmation.\u201d<br> Explains both the purpose and the next steps. Suddenly the verification feels reasonable instead of annoying. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cInformation\u201d<br> Says nothing about what the user will know.<br> \u2705 \u201cWe save your information only to be able to get back to you.\u201d<br> If the information in question is about how the user's data is used, this type of copy can create security around that.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>\u274c \u201cSecure payment\u201d<br> Feels more like marketing than actual help.<br> \u2705 \u201cPayment is handled by our certified payment partner.\u201d<br> Explains how it is safe, not just that it is.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Try changing or clearing the filter.\"<br> Provides both explanation and help with the next steps. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does microcopy affect conversion?<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>Is there a connection between good microcopy and higher conversion? The simple answer is: yes. When words are unclear, diffuse or confusing, the user is forced to think, hesitate or feel unsure. This of course increases the risk of them leaving. When the texts are instead concrete and helpful, friction is reduced, and the likelihood that the user will actually act increases significantly. This can be about more purchases, more completed forms, more booked appointments or fewer support cases, to name a few examples.     <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-heading container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you get started with UX writing?  <\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block core-paragraph container \"><div class=\"row justify-content-center\"><div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<p>UX writing doesn\u2019t have to be difficult, but it can feel overwhelming if you don\u2019t know where to start. A good first step is to go through your most important flows \u2013 like contact forms, purchase steps, and registration \u2013 and read them from the user\u2019s perspective. Are the buttons clear? Do you understand what happens in the next step? Are there dead spaces that could guide you further?
