There’s been a lot of talk lately about how search behavior is changing. We recently wrote about how more and more people are turning to AI tools instead of Google to find information. And now comes the next piece of the puzzle: ChatGPT is launching Instant Checkout – a buy button inside the chat that adds a whole new dimension to e-commerce.
But what does it actually mean? When will the feature reach Sweden? And how can you prepare? Let’s dive into it.
What is Instant Checkout?
Maybe you turn to ChatGPT with questions like “what should I give my dad for Father’s Day?” If you type that in, you’ll get links to socks with funny prints, coffee mugs emblazoned with “the world’s best dad” or a box of chocolates in seconds.
But soon, you won’t even have to leave the chat to buy any of it. ChatGPT is launching Instant Checkout, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a buy button inside the chat that lets you complete your purchase right then and there.
What does this mean?
Instant Checkout gives businesses the opportunity to reach customers right when they’re in a buying mindset. Much like traditional search used to be tied to the customer journey – just in a new format.
But there’s an even more interesting dimension to it: purchases may happen even when the user wasn’t planning to buy anything at all.
From search to purchase – faster
In the past, you might have googled “carbonara recipe.” At best, you were ready to buy pancetta on the way home from work, but you were hardly in the buy-a-new-pot-or-frying-pan-or-even-new-appliances mode. Now, you might be, to take it to its extreme.
A conversation about the same recipe in ChatGPT could end with a suggestion for “related” products to elevate your carbonara: a new non-stick pan, a stainless steel grater, or a high-end induction stove. And you can buy it instantly – without ever leaving the chat.
From planning to impulse buying
Ask about the best way to get to the mountains and the chatbot might instantly recommend ski gear. Wonder how long a flight to Crete takes, and it might suggest a new suitcase. You can compare prices, pick a seller, and click “Buy” – all without opening another tab.
New opportunities – and new challenges
For brands, this shift means:
- More selling opportunities: AI can surface your product earlier in the customer journey.
- More contextual purchases: recommendations based on context, not just keywords.
- Less friction: the transaction happens where the inspiration begins.
But it also comes with:
- Tougher competition: Fewer spots in AI responses.
- Less control over the buyer journey: visibility depends on the AI’s logic.
- Higher content standards: structure and clarity are key to being selected at all.
When will Instant Checkout reach Sweden?
The agent-powered shopping experience has already started rolling out in the U.S. There, consumers can already shop directly from Etsy sellers in the chat, with over one million Shopify merchants soon to follow.
For now, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases – but up next are shopping carts, more sellers, and global expansion. So yes: it’s only a matter of time before it arrives in Sweden too.
How can brands adapt?
We’ve previously written about Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) – the art of becoming the AI’s go-to source. If you’ve read that, you’ll know that GEO is all about clear answers, credibility, clean structure, and fresh content.
Now, that strategy becomes even more important, as AI visibility could lead to real-time sales. GEO is no longer just part of your SEO strategy – it becomes part of your sales strategy.
In short: Brands that optimize to be featured in AI responses won’t just be seen – they’ll be positioned to sell in entirely new ways.
Want to be featured in AI results?
ChatGPT has already changed how people search for information. Now, it’s about to change how they shop.
If you want to be ready for that shift, now’s the time to implement GEO and start working to become one of the trusted sources and products that AI platforms choose to highlight.
